This visit marked the second day of their stay in Rwanda, where they are engaging in an official trip aimed at strengthening ties with the Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS).

The delegation was briefed on the history of Rwanda, from the time when Rwandans lived harmoniously to the onset of division. They learned how the colonialists created divisions among Rwandan families to make it easier for them to rule. Later, the tragedy reinforced by a discriminatory government that spread propaganda to deepen the divisions. After learning about the brutalities of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, the delegation arrived at burial site to pay respect for the victims and gaining insight into the destruction caused by the tragedy and its long-lasting effects.

After paying respects to the victims at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, CG Hamunyela expressed his sorrow over the tragic history of Rwanda but also praised the courage of Rwandans who led the way in stopping the Genocide. He also highlighted how their bravery is reflected in the progress Rwanda has made today.

CG Hamunyela was saddened by this history but appreciates those who sacrificed themselves to stop the Genocide.
