Gicumbi Correctional Facility was built in Kabere Village, Butare Cell, Nyankenke Sector, Gicumbi District, Northern Province.
Gicumbi Correctional Facility was built in 1975 and was formerly a rehabilitation facility for women wanderers.
In 1996, after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, The Correctional Facility housed women convicted of both genocide-related crimes and other crimes.
It was in 2003 that the Correctional Facility started to receive inmates from Byumba Prison. Built with a capacity to accommodate only 2,000 inmates, it now has 3,678 inmates.
Gicumbi Correctional Facility has an area of 90 ha, and the built-up Correctional Facility has an area of 1 ha.
