RCS chose biogaz as a better solution to reduce deforestation

The World has been confronted with the effects of a changing climate from so long ago till now. In recent months, Rwanda faced with floods resulting from heavy rainfalls countrywide. In recent years, droughts also in the eastern lowlands were quite a terrible disaster.

RCS is currently using biogas for 65% of all cooking fuel in prisons, for this reason, helps to raise minimum hygiene standards in prisons, and reduce deforestation. This ensures the protection of environment and sustainable management of natural resources.

The extreme use of firewood and charcoals accelerated deforestation and give a negative impact on climate change that result into increased temperatures, intensified rainfall and prolonged dry seasons.

The Commissioner General of RCS, CGP George Rwigamba, affirmed the halt of using wood fuels in prisons.

 “To put in place measures designed to prevent climate change in governmental environment management policy, we decided to stop using fuelwoods. Currently, we are using biogas on the average of 65% and briquettes on 35% in all 13 prisons.” CGP stated.

CGP George Rwigamba added that RCS is planning to use biogas on the average of 100% in order to improve sanitary conditions and provide a renewable and smoke-free source of cooking fuel.

The Government of Rwanda was one of the first countries in the World to ban plastic bags as an environmental management policy. Moreover, in 2015, more than 140 countries sealed a landmark deal, called the Kigali Amendment, to phase down the powerful climate-warming pollutants called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) under the Montreal Protocol, the treaty that saved the ozone layer.
