IRMCT Registrar Visits RCS Headquarters and Commends Rwanda’s correction standard

The meeting focused on a range of issues, with particular emphasis on the welfare of inmates, including those transferred by the IRMCT and currently serving sentences at Nyanza Correctional Facility.

The IRMCT, a United Nations body, was established to complete the remaining functions of international tribunals that prosecuted serious crimes such as genocide and crimes against humanity, notably the ICTR and ICTY. Among its key responsibilities is monitoring the enforcement of sentences and ensuring that host countries uphold international standards in the treatment of inmates.

During the visit, Tambadou and his delegation were briefed on Rwanda’s rehabilitation programme, which is implemented across all correctional facilities. The programme includes civic education and vocational training in fields such as tailoring, carpentry, automobile mechanics, handicrafts, as well as agriculture and livestock farming.

They also highlighted the role of sports and recreational activities in promoting inmates’ mental health and overall well-being. These initiatives are designed to support inmates’ rehabilitation and prepare them for reintegration into society upon completion of their sentences.

Mr. Tambadou and his delegation were briefed on Rwanda’s rehabilitation programme.

Following a visit to Nyanza Correctional Facility yesterday, Tambadou praised the Government of Rwanda and RCS leadership for maintaining high standards in inmate welfare and correction management.

“a few comment is basically to thank you for the reception we have received since yesterday when we visited Nyanza Correction Facility and for today’s details and comprehensive presentation about Rwanda Correctional Service, we have been very impressed by what we saw and what we heard from the inmates that we interacted with yesterday,” he said.

“what we have seen ourselves with our own eyes here in Rwanda, is nothing compared to where our ICTR prisoners are serving their sentences.

Mr. Tambadou praised the leadership of Rwanda for maintaining high standards in inmate welfare.
