An inmate who attempted to escape from prison when he was taken to court for trial was foiled when security officers discovered his plan before he could flee.
According to CIP Hillary Sengabo, the Rwanda Correctional Services Spokesperson (RCS), Faragie Byumvuhore, 22 is a terror suspect and was arrested as he tried to run away from the Supreme Court in Kigali.
Sengabo said that the suspect had been aided by her sister and his wife who brought him clothes as they came to hear court proceedings.
“The suspect was arrested as he tried to get out of the Supreme Court in Kigali and investigations to identify the motive behind the attempt to escape have started,” Sengabo said
The suspect Byumvuhore hails from Rusizi district and was arrested on 3rd September 2016 in Gasabo district.
RCS has previously said that security in prisons is secure and officials are working on ways to further improve it by also increasing the number of prison guards which is still low compared to the number of inmates they are supposed to guard.
