Official launch of laundry areas at Musanze Prison

Musanze, 24th March 2021

Rwanda Correctional Service in partnership with a Non-Governmental Organization “Good News” launched a modern laundry area for female inmates at Musanze Prison.

The construction activities of the laundry area were done to improve the good health of inmates and to promote hygiene and sanitation in order to help female inmates to prevent severe illness from water-borne diseases.

A female inmate Domithile MUKANKURANGA said that those built-up facilities will enable them to access the sanitation services hence improving their better living standard. “We have now found a place to wash utensils such as cups, plates, spoons and folks and we are very happy and excited to have a modernized laundry area.” She applauded.

Pius NYAKAYIRO, who represented Good News at the event, thanked RCS for the meaningful partnership and said that the reason why they chose to build sanitation facilities in female prisons was due to the reason that female inmates need special attention, the fact that they live with their kids in prison.

Deputy Commissioner General of RCS, DCGP Jeanne Chantal UJENEZA, appreciated Good news for its good cooperation with various activities done in prisons including construction of hygienic facilities, reproductive health training and so forth, she urged that female inmates take good care of the built-in facilities to prevent diseases hence promoting good hygiene practices.

“This project of building hygiene facilities has an estimated budget of sixty-two million Rwandan Francs (62,000,000frw) and will be implemented in four female prisons namely: Musanze, Muhanga, Nyamagabe, and Ngoma.

There are 690 female inmates in Musanze prison, and 95 kids living with their mother.
