For the first time, adult prisoner sits for A. level National Examination.

Ashimwe Josue is 22 years old. Currently incarcerated at Nyagatare juvenile prison, he deep values the opportunity rendered to him by doing advanced National Examinations, this time academic year again involves six students for Ordinary level.

On 12nd November 2019,across the country all students started ordinary Level National Examination currently with S6also commenced their final Examinations.

Ashimwe confess, he was guilty of defaming His Excellence president republic of Rwanda, a crime he did unexpectedly in 2016 then he was still senior six student at Zaza TTC (Teacher Training College) he “said”.

“I was a member of media club at Zaza TTC, I illegal owned mobile phone and I downloaded fake news from internet and published false news against H E and I ignorantly passed over to public without editing the content and paying attention audience impact, then I ended in prison.” He said.

“Iam transformed, I can advise general public to avoid publishing fake news from internet and social medias to always access the authenticity and source of the story,I really thank for the government policy of allowing prisoners to pass exam like any other free persons,it is unbelievable”Ashimwe added.

Rwanda Correction Service (RCS) Spokesperson SSP Hillary Sengabo said

“Rwanda Correction Service (RCS) has said education is one of major pillars of RCS so, it is in this regard we always offer chances to these inmates so as to rehabilitate them and avoid future recidivism he advises the general public to crimes.    

Nyagatare juvenile prison accommodates 300 juvenile inmates. Since 2016, four years ago, at least 26 inmates did and won Ordinary level national examinations and 74 pupils in primary school.
