Twelve Nyagatare juvenile inmates sit national PLE

It is a joyful week for twelve juvenile inmates as they can test their ability and see if they will be able to acquire secondary education next years if they pass Primary Leaving Exams (PLE) they are sitting.

Like other pupils whose rights to primary education, twelve juvenile inmates who are serving their respective sentences in Nyagatare prison are sitting PLE that started on Monday, 12th November 2018 in Groupe Scolaire of Nyagatare

Among the candidates 10 of them are male and 2 female.

While children who pass primary school national exams are transferred to secondary schools across the country, inmate candidates who pass same exams will study from inside the prison as they should serve the sentences they were handed, according to RCS.

Whenever juvenile inmates pass exams they go on with secondary studies while in prison, because Nyagatare juvenile prison has   O’level schools and qualified teachers and they respect the ministry of education program

They are convinced to pass the exam according to inmate candidate in this exam:” We are good prepared of exam and we hope ours teachers because are qualified”.   He added that their elders passed the same exam in the last years and all passed.

The juvenile inmates have also to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVETs) centers. They are studying technical lessons in afternoon while in the morning they study primary and secondary school programs.

Nyagatare juvenile inmates who are sentenced while they were undergoing primary education go on basing on the year they were in while also they receive correctional services.

The Nyagatare Juvenile Prison accommodates 373 children between the ages of 14 and 18 who are convicted of various crimes. They are sentenced as criminals of crimes such as theft, rape and drug usage.
