RCS training school: Graduation of 225 prison warders

The 225 prison warders have graduated in RCS training School Friday on 14 June 2019. Twenty eight of them are women. The institution of Rwanda correctional service expects them to be effective in protecting prisons in Rwanda.

The new prisons warders have spent nine months in the school of Rwanda Correctional Service to acquire knowledge specifically how to use a gun and stop strikes with the aim of taking good care of inmates.

The minister of justice and government attorney, Mr Johnston Busingye said that the ceremony manifests the government’s will in improving prison guarding and making it more professional.

In his remarks he said: “The priority goal is to equip the prison guards with knowledge of correcting the prisoners so that they change behaviors and observe the government agenda”

He further commended the new prison warders for their good behaviors during nine months training.

:”We are grateful to you for the commitment you showed during training, you should apply effectively well the basic knowledge acquired about security of prisoners during your daily activities by collaborating well with your colleagues , avoid anything that can tarnish the image of RCS” he added .

Speaking at the occasion, the Commandant of RCS Training school,  CP  Wakubirwa Eduard said that the skills given to prison guards are based on the profession of prison guarding , human rights , professional skills in prison guarding and they are also taught army protection like how to use guns and to stop strike.

Kayitesi Deborah new prison warder said that among her goals she wants to observe prisoners’ rights.

She had this to say “This is a day of happiness to me, it’s a day I also feel like I’m among the people who implement the skills we acquired from here, what I have learned here is that I’m going to observe the rights of prisoners, even though they committed crimes, they must be corrected so that when they are released from prison they are well behaved people ‘’

Kayitesi encouraged other girls to get involved into prison guarding because it’s a profession like any others.

Apart from junior officers, senior officers are trained by RDF and National Police in partnership with RCS.
