ICRC lauds efficiency use of funds in prisons

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has lauded the way funds it injects in supporting prisons through Rwanda Correctional Services (RCS) are spent.

Officials from ICRC in Rwanda held talks with RCS officials on 20th /December 2017 aiming at assessing how activities ICRC supported over this ending year were implemented.

Officials said they also discussed pending activities to be supported in the next year.

Officials talked about supporting hygiene and sanitation projects which ICRC mainly supports .They include providing potable water in all prisons as so far all prisons, including the newly constructed Mageragere have access to water.

Activities to be implemented include constructing water canals as well as tanks to store enough water that can be used even in dry season, according to the officials.

ICRC hailed Huye prison for its liquid and solid soap factory that was handed to RCS early last year for its contribution as apart from the fact that the factory satisfied the prison, the products are also available on the market outside the prison.

ICRC also played a role over this year include providing mosquito nets to the needs inmates and  insecticide to prevent various diseases.

It also provided training to prison guards geared towards promoting inmates rights and their welfare.

During the discussions, ICRC hailed RCS for the way it spends the support which is provided and the partnership will it has demonstrated for both parties to promote the welfare of inmates in a bid for RCS to achieve its correctional objective.
