Huye prison: Inmates make large cooking pans “Muvelo”

Huye cooking pans factory employs inmates and prison guards, pans which are manufactured from this factory are big and strong as they are made from metal known as INOX.

The in charge of production in Huye prison CIP Charles Mutwarangabo said that the cooking pans made from a very strong metal known as INOX, he stressed that they make small and big  sauce pans .

He had this to say” So far they have made 282 sauce pans with the weighing capacity of 500L, 200L, 100L’’ . Apart from the big size of cooking pans, the customer who wishes to buy a pan chooses the type he /she wants.

Currently all prisons in Rwanda and various schools from south province have already bought these cooking pans commonly known as muvero.

The customers are not only Rwandans but also from other African countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroun and Burundi.

Habamenshi Gerard, an inmate from Huye prison said that he and his colleagues working in this factory learn a lot,  stressing that when they will be released from the prison this profession will benefit them and their families too.

The inmate who does income generating activities benefits 10% of the profit and the remaining is allocated to the government.
