At Rwamagana Correctional Facility, there was an official launch of E-Court room system

The launch is attended by UNDP representative in Rwanda, Madam Fatmata Loveta Sessay, the RCS Commissioner General, CG Evariste Murenzi, the Permanent secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Benjamin Sesonga, The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Théophile Mbonera, the Director of ILPD, Dr Aimé Muyoboke Karimunda and the RCS Deputy Commissioner General, DCG Rose Muhisoni, and others from different agencies.

SP Alain Gilbert Mbarushimana, Director of  Rwamagana Correctional Facility, talk about various benefits E-court room system and its result.

He said, “since this technology-based court system started, 4928 inmates have been tried, this has been fruitful because it has reduced the time we spend on the way to take those who need be present in a court, that prevent them from escaping on the way toward the court, protect the inmates from the direct infectious diseases, reduce the number of trips and the number of staff escorts have been reduced. I conclude by asking the institutions that have something to do with justice to make efforts to solve the challenges in order have a better justice.”

The Rwanda Correctional Service Commissioner, CG Evariste Murenzi, thanked the sponsors of the project and told them that their support has a precious foundation.

He said, “I would like to thank UNDP, for your contribution to the development of justice in Rwanda, where you supported us in the construction E-Court rooms that will be used in virtual hearings on technology, they help us to build  rooms for Hearing at four Correctional Facilities which are Nyarugenge, Nyamagabe, Rubavu and Huye which is under construction, i thank you for your contribution in our justice because it is a very strong foundation.”

The UNDP representative in Rwanda, Madam Fatmata Loveta Sessay, said that she is proud of how their support has contributed to the development of justice in Rwanda .

She said: “We are very happy, our happiness come from UNDP support that has  a good contribution on success of justice, in fact we are in modern technology, we need to be cooperate with this digital era which need a speed in which everyone is required to alert, that is why even in justice it should be prioritized, I insure you that, in cooperation with RCS we will do more, the adoption of this method of electronic is very essential because it reduce delay, travel cost and other related cost. We must use our wisdom regardless of the country’s size and create a world that have good impact and I know that it is more possible.”

This program is first introduced in Correctional Facilities during the Covid-19 Pandemic outbreak, because in that time government have banned all activities of mass gathering to prevent the contamination.
