Huye Correctional Facility

  • Huye Prison was established in 1956 and operates in the houses of the company MINETAIN which was built in 1927, with an area of ​​311,25 Areas. It had a capacity of 1,500 inmates.
  • In the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, there has been an increase in the number of buildings that allowed the Prison to accommodate 3,700 prisoners in 2008.
  • In 2009, the new two-story Turwubake building was added and increased the capacity to 4,876.
  • In 2010, the former Rwandex building was added to the prison and raised the capacity to accommodate prisoners to 5,500.
  • In 2013, 2 more two-story buildings were built by the inmates and raised the capacity to accommodate prisoners to 7,500
  • In 2016, a two-story building was completed by inmates and raised the capacity to accommodate prisoners to 9,500.
  • After another addition of 2 more two-story buildings built by inmates in 2018, Huye Prison currently houses 13,243 inmates. Of the 13,248 inmates we have, the prison has only a capacity to accommodate 9,246 of them (13,243-9,246) and a total of 3997 inmates is exceeding.
